How solar panel efficiency is calculated

Efficiency (%) = Rated Watts ÷ (Area in m² × 1000 W/m²) × 100

Efficiency measures how much of the sunlight hitting a panel's surface it converts to electricity — it's not the same as total wattage, since a bigger panel can output more watts at lower efficiency. Most residential panels today fall between 18% and 23%; anything higher usually means premium cell technology at a premium price. This matters most when roof space is limited and you need maximum watts per square foot.
