What a tracker actually does
A solar tracker physically moves panels throughout the day to follow the sun's position, capturing more direct sunlight than a fixed-tilt array — single-axis trackers adjust east-to-west through the day; dual-axis trackers also adjust for seasonal sun angle changes.
The production gain is real
Single-axis tracking commonly adds a meaningful double-digit percentage production boost over a fixed array in the same location; dual-axis tracking can add further gain on top of that — a genuine improvement over the fixed-mount math used throughout our other calculators.
Why residential installations rarely use them
- Cost — trackers add significant equipment and installation cost, often not justified by the production gain at residential scale.
- Moving parts — motors and mechanisms introduce additional maintenance needs and failure points compared to a static fixed-mount array with essentially none.
- Roof-mount incompatibility — most residential roof-mounted installations can't accommodate a tracker at all; trackers are almost exclusively used in ground-mount, utility-scale, or large commercial applications.
