Winter doesn't damage a well-designed system, but knowing what to expect prevents mistaking normal seasonal variation for a problem.

Expect lower production — that's normal, not a malfunction

Shorter days and lower sun angle reduce output well before any snow arrives — see the seasonal output calculator for what a typical swing looks like at your latitude. A meaningful drop from summer peak production in December or January is expected behavior, not a sign something's wrong.

Check your string voltage against cold-weather limits

Panel voltage rises as temperature drops, which matters most on the coldest morning of the year, not an average winter day. Batteries lose some usable capacity in the cold

Most battery chemistries, including lithium, see reduced usable capacity and charging capability in cold temperatures — if your battery is in an unheated space, actual winter performance may run somewhat below its rated specs. Snow will likely clear on its own
