Net-Zero Home Design: Where Solar Fits Into the Bigger Picture

A net-zero home produces as much energy as it consumes annually — solar is usually the final piece, not the whole strategy.

Efficiency first, generation second

The most cost-effective path to net-zero starts with reducing consumption — insulation, air sealing, efficient HVAC (see our heating/cooling guide) — before sizing solar to cover what's left. Chasing net-zero through solar alone on an inefficient home requires a much larger, more expensive system than necessary.

Electrification often precedes true net-zero

"Net-zero" and "off-grid" are different goals
