kWh vs MWh: When Bigger Energy Units Matter

Residential solar talks in kWh almost exclusively — but MWh shows up often enough in utility-scale and grid conversations to be worth knowing.

The conversion is simple

1 MWh (megawatt-hour) = 1,000 kWh (kilowatt-hours)

A typical home uses somewhere in the range of 10,000-15,000 kWh a year — or roughly 10-15 MWh. Residential solar and battery specs almost always use kWh because the numbers stay in a convenient, readable range; MWh becomes more practical once you're talking about utility-scale generation or large commercial systems.
