A compact sedan can exceed 4 miles per kWh, while a full-size electric truck might get closer to 2, meaning the truck costs roughly double per mile to charge even at the identical electricity rate. This is the single biggest driver of cost-per-mile differences between models.
Battery size drives charging time more than cost
A larger battery takes longer to charge at the same charger power, even though cost per mile depends more on efficiency than raw battery size. A Tesla Model 3's smaller battery charges faster on the same home charger than a Rivian R1T's much larger one, independent of how efficient each vehicle is per mile.

A home Level 2 charger might supply up to 11.5kW, but the vehicle's onboard charger has its own maximum acceptance rate — some models cap lower than that, meaning a more powerful home charger doesn't always translate to faster charging for every vehicle.
