EV Home Charging: What It Actually Costs and How Long It Takes

Two numbers matter for home EV charging: how much it costs, and how long it takes. Both depend on more variables than most guides admit.

Cost per mile is the number that actually matters

Sticker prices for electricity and gasoline aren't directly comparable — one is priced per kWh, the other per gallon. The only fair comparison is cost per mile, which normalizes both to the same unit of distance traveled.

EV cost per mile = Electricity rate ÷ Efficiency (miles per kWh)
Gas cost per mile = Gas price ÷ MPG

Home charging overnight, especially on an off-peak time-of-use rate, is almost always meaningfully cheaper per mile than gasoline — often by half or more. Run your specific vehicle and local rates through the EV home charging cost calculator for an exact number instead of a generic average.

Level 1 vs Level 2: the time difference is enormous

A standard 120V household outlet (Level 1) delivers roughly 1.2-1.5kW — enough to add maybe 3-5 miles of range per hour, which can mean 20-40+ hours for a full charge on a larger battery. A 240V Level 2 home charger delivers 7-11.5kW or more, cutting that to a few hours, comfortably done overnight.

Specs vary a lot by model — don't assume a generic number

Battery size, efficiency (miles per kWh), and onboard charger speed all vary significantly across EV models — a compact sedan and a full-size electric truck can differ by 2-3× on efficiency alone. Yes, for lower-mileage daily driving — if you drive under roughly 30-40 miles a day, an overnight Level 1 charge on a standard outlet can fully replenish that in most EVs without needing a Level 2 charger installed.

Does charging at a public fast charger cost more than at home?

Usually yes, often significantly — public DC fast charging networks typically charge more per kWh than home electricity rates, reflecting the equipment and demand-charge costs of running a fast-charging station.
