Cold temperatures actually raise panel voltage

Counterintuitively, solar cells are more efficient electrically in cold temperatures — panel voltage rises as temperature drops. This is genuinely useful to know but also matters for system design: a string sized to stay within an inverter's maximum voltage on a warm day can push that limit on the coldest morning of the year. Snow is a temporary, not permanent, production loss

Panels are typically dark-colored and angled enough to shed snow within a day or two of sun exposure, so a snow-covered array is a short-term interruption rather than a lasting problem in most cases. Panels mounted at a steeper tilt shed snow faster than nearly flat installations.

What this means for sizing

Grid-tied systems under net metering generally don't need special winter sizing, since summer surplus offsets winter shortfall over the year.
